The Best Vitamins for Teeth and Gums (And the Foods That Contain Them)

Your teeth and gums need more than calcium. These six nutrients, and the foods richest in them, form the nutritional foundation of long-term oral health. Plus: when to skip the cooking and reach for a supplement.
1. Calcium and phosphorus, the building blocks
These two minerals literally build and re-mineralize tooth enamel. Dairy, sardines, almonds, tofu, and leafy greens all deliver them. But absorption depends heavily on vitamin D and K2 (see below). Without those, calcium can deposit in the wrong places.
2. Vitamin D, the master regulator
Without enough vitamin D, your body can't shuttle calcium into your teeth and bones. Deficiency is consistently associated with higher rates of cavities and gum disease. Aim for 10 to 20 minutes of midday sun, or supplement 1,000 to 2,000 IU daily, and get tested at least once a year.
3. Vitamin K2, the traffic cop
K2 directs calcium to the right places (teeth and bones) instead of the wrong ones (arteries and soft tissue). Find it in natto, aged hard cheeses, egg yolks from pasture-raised hens, and grass-fed butter.
4. Vitamin C, for gum tissue
Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, which keeps gum tissue strong and reduces bleeding. Bell peppers, kiwi, citrus, and broccoli are the most bioavailable sources. Severe deficiency causes scurvy, the original gum disease.
5. CoQ10, for energy at the gum line
Coenzyme Q10 supports the cellular energy needed for gum repair. It is found in fatty fish and organ meats, and is often supplemented at 100 to 200 mg daily by adults with chronic gingivitis.
6. Oral-active probiotics, the new pillar
Not technically a vitamin, but increasingly considered essential. Strains like BLIS K12 and L. reuteri actively crowd out harmful bacteria and may help to reduce inflammation at the gum line.
When to bundle them into a single dental supplement
If hitting all six daily through food and pills is unrealistic, a well-formulated dental supplement covers the gaps and adds oral probiotics in one chewable. See our current top five in the best dental supplements guide.
